Tummy Time: Building Strong Foundations Through Everyday Movement
26 February 2026 - PlayOn Founders
Tummy time is one of the simplest and most important ways babies begin to explore movement. Long before structured play or equipment, it’s through lying, lifting, rolling and pushing that babies develop strength, coordination and body awareness.
And the truth is: tummy time can happen almost anywhere.
On a carpet. On a blanket. Across a parent’s chest. On the grass. On the floor while you lie nearby.
What matters most isn’t the surface — it’s time, position and connection.
What Is Tummy Time Really About?
Tummy time supports the development of:
• Neck and upper body strength
• Core stability
• Shoulder and arm control
• Early postural awareness
• Visual tracking and engagement
It also helps babies learn how their bodies move against gravity — a key foundation for rolling, crawling and later gross motor skills.
Creating a Supportive Tummy Time Environment
While tummy time doesn’t require special equipment, the environment can influence how comfortable - and how enjoyable - it feels.
A soft, supportive surface can help some babies settle more easily, particularly on harder floors or in shared living spaces. Visual contrast, interesting textures and simple face-to-face interaction can encourage longer, more engaged play.
When it comes to materials, there’s no single “right” choice - just different advantages.
Soft fabric-covered surfaces feel more sensory-luxurious and cuddly, which many babies respond to instinctively. Leatherette, on the other hand, offers very practical benefits: it’s easy to wipe down, doesn’t absorb spills and helps prevent the inevitable build-up of drool (and whatever else babies, siblings or pets contribute). Leatherette also makes it easy to take tummy time outdoors. Mats can be used on patios, lawns, or shaded outdoor areas, then wiped clean and brought straight back inside - no washing machine required.
Where PlayOn Fits In
At PlayOn, we don’t believe in prescribing products for developmental milestones. Babies don’t need things - they need opportunity, safety and connection.
Our play mats and soft surfaces are designed to support movement wherever they’re useful - in therapy spaces, early learning environments and homes looking for a comfortable, durable base for floor play. They’re not essential for tummy time. They’re simply one way to support a moment that already matters.
And as children grow - gaining confidence, strength and a sense of adventure - those same surfaces often come into their own, supporting bigger movements, early risk-taking and more dynamic play.
Because strong foundations aren’t built on equipment -
they’re built through everyday movement and meaningful interaction.
